Malacology
is the branch of invertebrate zoology that deals with the study of
the Mollusca, the second-largest phylum of animals in terms of
described species after the arthropods. Mollusks include snails and
slugs, clams, and cephalopods, along with numerous other kinds.
These animals are amongst many species that suffer from the catastrophic transformations that occur in our oceans and seas. At the same time, many subspecies in this phylum have shown impressive adaptations to all kinds of disruptions in their habitat. It is this trait that inspired me to create my own subspecies of mollusk, and to speculate on future mutations that could be triggered by anthropogenic seascapes.
